Thanks for your help. I was able to install tetex-texmf by compiling it on my machine using the "fink install" command.

I will do my best to answer your question (from below), but I don't want to actually repeat the steps since it is working with the "fink install" method.

Here's what I believe I did:

> cp /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/tetex-texmf*.* to /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo
> fink index
> sudo dselect
(and I couldn't find the package there)

Then I tried editing my /sw/etc/fink.conf file, adding unstable/main to the Trees: line.

> fink index
> sudo dselect

still no tetex there.

Finally, I tried adding unstable/crypto to Trees: and still nothing.

Thanks again for your help,
Rob

There is a version of tetex-texmf in stable, so you didn't necessarily
have to try for the unstable versions. The reason that you can't
install it from deselect is because of licensing restrictions: see the
FAQ at http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#bindist

There has been no modification to the procedure to install unstable
packages, so let me in turn ask you a question: what was the specific
nature of the failure? (i.e. what command did you try, and what were
the error messages)

I'm trying to install latex using fink.

It seems, that to do any of the installs, I need a package called
tetex-texmf. But I can't find this package in dselect. I looked at
the faq, and I checked in the unstable packages, and indeed it was
there. So I tried *both* of their tips for installing an unstable
package and none of them worked.

I have two questions:

1) It seems to me that I must be doing something wrong if installing
latex is an unstable thing. Is there a diffferent/better/correct way
of doing this?

2) If I am going about this correctly, is there perhaps an update to
the faq on using unstable packages?

Thanks,
Rob
