I reply to my own mail because I just saw, using gimp, that with some programs, my keymapping works fine! With Gimp, it's OK. If I insert text in a Gimp picture, the , , etc. are fine.

I think that the problem isn't the keymap, after all, but the encoding system. There is unicode, and there are several others whose name begins with: iso-* ... I should choose the right encoding and set it. Does anyone know how to do this?

Yes. :) If I choose "Suisse.keymaping", some keys are ok, but not the cruical ones... insteed of "", I get an "i", for example... , , etc are problematic as well...

If you work with an anglo-american-like keyboard, there is no need to configure anything... But if you use, as I, a Swiss-French keyboard, or, even more different, a French keyboard, you must do something.

Did you try to do the obvious, namely to use the Preferences manu entry to choose your keyboard? In XDarwin, you can choose the "Suisse.keymap", and in Apple's X11 beta 0.2, you can choose to use the same keymap as for the Aqua desktop. Only if these don't work correctly, you need to use xmodmap.
