[Fink-beginners] Gnome error at startup

I just installed Gnome and metacity and tried to start up Gnome from 
X11.app, but I got an error, and I just can't figure out what to do.  I 
had been reading the archives for this mailing list and changed my 
.xinitrc file to be:

PATH="$PATH:/sw/bin"

quartz-wm --only-proxy &
exec gnome-session
When I launch x11.app, I get the Gnome splash screen, then the 
following error in an error dialog box.

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not 
work correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log 
in.

Any ideas what I should do?
