quartz-wm --only-proxy &
One note--by calling quartz-wm here, you aren't running metacity. If you want to have metacity, call it instead of quartz-wm.
Actually, the --only-proxy mode is supposed that it does the clipboard sharing and such (like autocutsel) but without the window manager part, so you're still free to start your own window manager.
Whether that's conflicting with metacity is another matter, but it's supposed to let you run your own WM.
