I just wanted to add that the libpng problem mentioned in the FAQ can
affect not only users with the unstable tree enabled. I am presently not
using unstable, but I used to get these warnings, which appeared to be
harmless though.
The fact is that after a recent update I ended up with the following
libpng 1.0.12-6 PNG image format handling library
i libpng-shlibs 1.0.12-6 PNG image format handling library
i libpng3 1.2.5-4 PNG image format handling library
i libpng3-shlibs 1.2.5-4 PNG image format handling library
So the latest swap between libpng and libpng3 left libpng-shlibs.
I checked the info files in the stable tree and found that the only
packages with a Depends or BuildDepends on libpng-shlibs are
libpng
gnuplot-3.8h.0-8 but not gnuplot-3.8i.0-2
r-base-1.6.1-2 and r-base-1.6.2-1 but nnot r-base-1.6.2-2
r-base-atlas-1.6.1-2
plus a host of kde packages.
Since I have none of these installed I tried to remove libpng-shlibs.
As a result X11 hangs on startup when using gnome.
The error I got first was:
dyld: /sw/bin/sawfish can't open library: /sw/lib/libpng.2.dylib (No such
file or directory, errno = 2)
After reinstalling sawfish gnome starts but I get the following error
dyld: background-properties-capplet can't open library:
/sw/lib/libpng.2.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
and no background.
I guess everything will get back to normal if I reinstall (part of) gnome,
assuming that the latest versions do not need libpng.2.dylib.
Is this indeed the case? If not I'll just reinstall libpng-shlibs and live
with the warnings.
Also does anyone know which gnome packages need to be rebuilt?
