Thanks, after reinstalling control-center and its split-offs the desktop background is back.
I will recapitulate what happened in case someone else encounters similar problems. I was experiencing the libpng problem reported in the FAQ's despite the fact that I do not have the unstable tree enabled. The problem appeared when running gnome. I noticed that after a recent update libpng3 and libpng3-shlibs were installed, but libpng-shlibs was also still there. Since none of the packages I have installed depends on libpng-shlibs I removed it, but as a consequence X11 would hang on startup when running gnome. This was solved by rebuilding sawfish. At this point gnome would start, but I got no desktop background. Reinstalling control-center brought (apparently) everything back to normal.
