Thanks for the prompt reply. Actually I usually run windowmaker and only use gnome+sawfish from time to time. Moreover I think in my case the problem is a minor one. Even in gnome everything seems to work fine apart from the missing background. So I'll try to figure out what needs to be rebuilt. Any idea on where to begin for the background problem, i.e. which package provides the "background-properties-capplet"?
