Alexander,

It appears that I have 1.4 currently installed. I've noticed that when
I do open Gnome via a terminal window, I get a message that I have a
non-compliant WM running, even though sawfish is installed. In fact, I
can't activate sawfish in the Gnome control center, even though it's
obviously there.

What version of GNOME are you using? If it's 2.z, then the problem
looks to be the fact that "gnome-session" doesn't invoke a window
manager automatically the way it did in GNOME 1.x
