Alexander, OK, tried what you said. I got as far as my blackbox app launching, but then couldn't get to gnome.

Try running the Console utility (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app) and then try to run from XDarwin.app--that way you can see the messages the same way you do from a startx. Alexander K.
