Alexander,

I've started over.  Disinstalled everything and now am scrupulously
following "Fun with Fink" in reinstalling.  I think I messed up in one
of two places: the XFree86 version I installed, or the unstable,
compiled programs I added.  Thanks for the quick response anyway.

then couldn't get to gnome.

You shouldn't need to use sudo to do startx, but I don't think that's
your
problem.  Try running the Console utility
(/Applications/Utilities/Console.app) and then try to run from
XDarwin.app--that way you can see the messages the same way you do from
a
startx.
