I get the same message intermittently on my laptop, even though I do have esound installed, so it may be something else.
Interesting .... many also have reported problems with no sound in KDE 3.1 in YellowDog Linux 3.0, too, with
Error initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
One of the workarounds was to go to the sound panel, change the setting to a lower quality, then logout/in and change back.
But that didn't fix it on my 8600 either ...
