Last clarification, then:  was this in the Apple Terminal or an xterm?  If
it was the former, then the problem was probably that your DISPLAY wasn't
set there.

Yes. I started X11 by doubleclicking the X11 app in the applications
folder. Then I typed 'amaya' in teh command line to start Amaya.
