That's very odd to me, then.  

Did you install amaya from the binary distribution or from source?  It may
be that a runtime dependency is missing from the package description.

It is xterm. The Application menu is named "X11" the window is named
xterm, in the applications menu has one item named "Terminal"
corresponding to the xterm window. When I type printenv DISPLAY I get:

bash-2.05a$ printenv DISPLAY
:0.0
bash-2.05a$
