Yes. I finally got it all running. On my system, when I start X11 it brings up the full gnome desktop and aqua disappears entirely. When I logout it flips back to Aqua. Can also set up where X11 runs inside Aqua with menu bars still visible. I chose the former to get a better feel for Linux in general. Apple and Linux folks have done an amazing job getting this to work as flawlessly as it does--although getting it to run can be a pain to start with.
