And if you are running Apple's X11, you usually need to have

. /sw/bin/init.sh

in your .xinitrc before you run any other programs.

Whats the command to launch Gnome?
I edited my .xinitrc file to include
"exec xterm &
Gnome-session" but only an xterm starts when I start XDarwin, Any ideas?

Have a look at examples of working two-line .xinitrc scripts for starting gnome, at http://homepage.mac.com/sao1/fink/#top15
and at
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/run-xfree86.php?phpLang=en#xinitrc

Direct your attention, in particular, to

- which line takes the "exec" command
- the difference between upper- and lowercase letters
