One final quick question.
Can I install GTK+2 and recompile programs such as ethereal or nmap to use GTK2 instead of 1.2? Or is this not possible?
It appears that ethereal has an option to be built against gtk+2.
Fink doesn't automatically support this, however. One option would be to contact the Fink maintainer for ethereal and ask for a gtk+2 variant to be made available. This would be the easy way to do it--since it's not really a new package I don't see the need in going through the formality of requesting it on the tracker.
Another option would be to make up your own ethereal package.
