yep - you were right, I did have another instance running! thanks

This time I tried to install "Scribus" and got the following error:

ld: -undefined: unknown argument: dynamic_lookup
/usr/bin/libtool: internal link edit command failed
make: *** [libjpeg.la] Error 1
### execution of make failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling libjpeg-6b-6 failed

Also, when I tried to intall "Soundtracker" I got the following error:

gmain.c:1213: for each function it appears in.)
make[2]: *** [gmain.lo] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2
### execution of make failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling glib-1.2.10-18 failed

Each time I try to install a package with dependencies, I seem to get a similar error. Here's the one I get from trying to install "soundtracker":

dpkg -i /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/base/fink_0.19.1 -1_darwin-powerpc.deb
dpkg: status database area is locked by another process
### execution of dpkg failed, exit code 2
Failed: can't install package fink-0.19.1-1
