Benjamin had the same idea so I removed and reinstalled and then Ben asked for "hm, you know, I'm not sure Xrender is part of xfree86 4.2 -- what do you get from a:
find /usr/X11R6 | grep -i render"
The remove and reinstall is first followed by the "hm, you know...."
