Hi Martin,

Thank you for your detailed response. I have been hacking away at this for the last week and have to call for some more advice.
After executing the debug script properly I was unable to understand what it was telling me other than X11 was installed and so was two pieces of Xfree86. So I followed the instructions in the FAQ #9,11 and reinstalled from the third CD and the tools CD then executed the updates and reinstalled the recommended stuff from the FAQ. I am still failing with the same message. The debug script is listing one less XFree86 item. Can you explain the out put of the script? I am not sure what it is telling me.

OS X version: 10.3.3 Darwin version: 7.3.0 fink package manager version: 0.19.2 Fink distribution version: 0.7.0.cvs Fink updated from: rsync

Checking fink-installed xfree86 packages:
Found xfree86-base-shlibs

X11 version installed: 4.3
Fink xfree86 packages found, therefore no virtual packages

Here is the situation from dpkg:

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-================================-================================- ======================================================================== ========
ii xfree86-base-shlibs 4.2.1.1-3 XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data

Finished at fink-x11-debug.txt line 73.

I also tried to address the message that fink gives when the install fails.

You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system.

Press Return to continue.

I renamed the X11R6 file with no results an then the X11 file too, same results. I put everything back.

I was previously trying to install Gimp but this round of tinkering was trying to install Python.

TIA,

Mark Wright

Hi All,
I am trying to install GTK+2 in preparation for installing Gimp 2.0 and can't get past this X11-Xfree86 conflict. I ran Martins script that I assume creates links so that X11 can do Xfree86 business but I am still failing.

No, no. The fink-x11-debug script does not *do* anything. It only tries to display enough information about your system so that it becomes clear where the problem is and what to do about it.

I am assuming my attempt at the script worked. I pasted the script into BBEdit and saved the file as ":fink-x11-debug" and ran "perl fink-x11-debug" from root. It paused a moment then returned the prompt

This means it did not run. Otherwise it would have written several dozen lines of output to your screen. Maybe you saved it with Mac line endings instead of Unix line endings? The easiest way to get it saved correctly would have been not to click on the link so that it shows up in the browser, but to Ctrl-click and then choose "save as" (or Alt-click) and save it to the disk directly.

The following 6 additional packages will be installed:
 gtk+2-shlibs pango1-xft2 pango1-xft2-dev pango1-xft2-shlibs xfree86
 xfree86-shlibs
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y

This is the wrong answer. As explained in the FAQ #9.11, there are basically two reasons why Fink wants to install xfree86 when you have Apple's X11 installed: Either your installation of X11 is incomplete or you have some Fink xfree86 things installed. In both cases, the fink-x11-debus script gives additional information about the situation.
