So investigate /usr/local, then eventually /usr/share, etc... If you compile from the command line (configure, make, make install), you'll see all the installation process at the end, so browse the lines when issuing make install.
Also, do you guys recommend me to "mix and match" programs/packages this way?Personally, I'd first install everything I can via Fink, more convenient, and manually only those programs that cannot be installed via Fink.
