Well, I think that I will go ahead and re-install Fink and packages from Fink. I will see if I can get gBrowse to work with Fink installed MySQL, libpng, libjpg, libgd, BioPerl. There are other components required by gBrowse not in Fink (i.e. GD and a slew of perl modules). If I am successful, I will try to work on making a Fink package so that other people might be benefited from that. I have to say, though, my UNIX knowledge is close to none, so don't hold your breath.

Thanks for all the helpful discussions and suggestions.

About the same as with Fink, except that instead of /sw, the prefix will be /usr. So investigate /usr/local, then eventually /usr/share, etc... If you compile from the command line (configure, make, make install), you'll see all the installation process at the end, so browse the lines when issuing make install.

Also, do you guys recommend me to "mix and match" programs/packages this way?
Personally, I'd first install everything I can via Fink, more convenient, and manually only those programs that cannot be installed via Fink.

And put in a request on the tracker for packages that aren't in Fink, but could be!
