I just downloaded the new version (1.0) of x11 from Apple's website. I
noticed from the FAQ on Fink's website it says to add 'source
/sw/bin/init.sh' to your xinitrc file in your home directory. However I
don't have a .xinitrc file in my home directory even when hidden files are
visible.
You should create it with (for example): echo "/sw/bin/init.sh" > .xinitrc
So I added ' source /sw/bin/init.sh' to my /etc/x11l/xinit/xinitrc file and when I launch a x11 windows I can run Fink installed programs.
Then remove the changes you made to /etc.
