Thanks for the tip. Now I'm running into a new problem--and I get this if I
run selfupdate, selfupdate-rsync, or selfupdate-cvs. (I tried returning to
CVS just in case it was a firewall issue.)
It'll get to the "update fink" part, show me the "curl" command that it's
running, and then return the following error:
curl: (22) The requested file was not found
### execution of curl failed, exit code 22
Downloading the file "fink-[whatever] " failed.
Then it will ask me if I want to retry mirrors etc. I can retry mirrors for
the rest of time, and it NEVER finds the file. I'm flummoxed and
bamboozled. Any suggestions?

That's because it's way out of date, cf.
http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/fink-mirrors. You may have
the latest version available via binaries, but that wasn't updated for
this purpose.
You haven't run a "Source->Selfupdate-rsync" ever, I guess, so your
package descriptions for source operations are outdated. Either do
that or follow the instructions given under "if you don't have the
Developer Tools installed" in the same FAQ entry above."
