Another information could come from the Console. If you open Console.app (in /Applications/Utilities/), there should be some lines starting with "Fink Installer:". It would be interesting to see in particular those lines where it says that something does not support symlinks.
Please forget this message. I saw the other messages solving the mystery only later. I think the installer needs to be fixed, but in the meantime the instruction
"Log in at the console as a user with admin privileges or switch to such a user in the Finder, before starting the Fink installer"
