It also generates HEAT.
I too did the XCode Tools/X11/fink deal to run gimp, ethereal...whereas i no longer run fink, I run Apple's X11 for linux-y stuff, and pretty much only run the Mac-compiled gimp.
ANYway.......
Back when I was getting all jiggy with xfree86 and fink, during the complile (hours!!) I took a couple of athletic cooling packs and stuck one under my *aluminum* laptop, and above it as well, replacing once even. It really put out a LOT of heat; processor and hard-drive....
I mean, I was cautious, I was aware I didn't want too severe a temprature gradient change, and sort of monitored the situation, but compiling was indeed heating that puppy up, and THAT freaked me out worse.
It worked out well in the end, IMHO. Thing ran cooler for the compile....
again, just a notion here.....
