You could just use Get Info (from the Finder) on the XCode application (/Developer/Tools/Applications/XCode) xcode found and installed from DVD is version 2.1 would software update bring it to 2.2?  I say would because software update won't run anymore is whining about "can't connect to update server."  Coincidence?
