Hello everyone,

Newcomer here, I'm afraid.

I have downloaded the latest version of Fink I could find (0.8.0 ) and can't install it. Installation is constantly refused. While running the installer, I get the message :

"Fink cannot be installed on this computer.
A root directory / sw exists. Please see the Read me file for update instructions, or for information on installing Fink on a separate volume. "

So: what does this mean? Why is it refusing to install?

Not wishing to waste anyone's time, I looked at FAQs and other help files, and the Read Me file, without finding an answer. I do not have a version of the GIMP installed, nor do I have a version of Virex.

It seems simply impossible to install Fink.

Perhaps it's only intended for people who are far more technical-minded than I am. But I'd heard that it was percisely meant to make things a little simpler. Up to now it's had the opposite effect.

BTW I'm running OS 10.4.4

Should I just give up and trash Fink, or is there something I can do?

Thanks

Xavier (Kreiss)
