I am not sure what you mean by "comfortable".  If you run a Mac with a lot of logins, there are of course ways to automate this using normal Unix tools.  I don't, so I have not bothered to set that up.

Among the open-source (and free-of-charge) package management systems, I find fink to be one of the best (and supported by a great community).
