My guess is that you missed something; there are all sorts of
dependencies you need to delete. You might want to delete everything in
/sw and /usr/X11R6 and start over.

I reinitialized the drive about a week ago for the sole purpose of insuring
that I was starting over. I installed a system with developer tools but
without Apple's X11 (I *had* installed Apple's X11 the first time I got the
segfault error during the setup of xorg), then installed and updated Fink
from fink-0.24.15.tar.gz, then tried to build and install xorg. I didn't try
using version 24.14 of Fink, because the segfault error had already occurred
once when I compiled and installed xorg under that version. I can't think of
any other more direct course of action to the segfault error through which a
clean start might have been insured. From my experience, I can't imagine
anything that could result in avoiding the segfault error with identical
hardware unless it involves deviation from the above course of action. If
anyone has successfully followed that procedure on the 20" dual core Intel
iMac, then I wouldn't have any idea how to go about explaining why their
result wasn't identical to mine, but I would surely like to know.

I think it needs to be said that htodd's recipe ("install everything from source and the segfault will go away") is pure voodoo. It may have worked for him, but so has installation from the bindist for some others. Up to now, nobody has a real explanation for the segfault of fc-cache nor a rational method for avoiding it.

It would be good if someone who is getting the segfault could look at it more closely with gdb and ktrace to find out where exactly it is happening. The most likely explanation is still either a corrupt cache file or a broken font.

Unfortunately, I cannot help, because a) when I tried first, I did not get the segfault (with xfree86 from the 10.4 bindist) and b) the only intel mac I have access to is a colleague's workstation on which I cannot break things freely.
