aptitude is a dpkg front-end which can remove orphaned packages. Say you
do aptitude install x. x depends on liby, so both are installed. You
then do aptitude remove x. liby is no longer of use, so aptitude also
removes that (first checking that no other packages depend on it).

I see it's present in the fink repository
<http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/aptitude>, but not on Intel
and not in stable or binary. 

I have a couple of questions:

 - does that aptitude package work as expected with binary packages?
 - does it work with source packages and, if not, is there a fink
   equivalent?
