Thanks Alexander,

I took the chance that gcc maintains backward compatibility and
substituted gcc-4.2 for gcc-4.0.1.

Four hours later, no crashes!

In the event, I can figure out how to use gfortran to create a mexmac file
that doesn't crash Matlab, I'll try out gfortran as well.
