I tried both. Since it is not necessary to run the kde desktop to run  
a kde application, the idea is running kile only (as long as X11 is  
running). However, to check if it was the cause of the problem, I also  
run kde itself, with no avail.

When I tried running the kde desktop, .xinitrc had
source /sw/bin/init.sh
/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
