Thanks for the pointers.  I performed a rebuild of gnuplot and it ran  
fine.  However, I still seem to be getting similar errors:

dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/Xdyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/

   Referenced from: /sw/lib/libwx_gtk2u_richtext-2.8.0.dylib
   Reason: Incompatible library version:  
libwx_gtk2u_richtext-2.8.0.dylib requires version 6.0.0 or later, but  
libfontconfig.1.dylib provides version 5.0.0
