INothing is obvious to me as to what is going on. The "starting" message with no error following it but still getting a crash is like what happens if you try to call a nonexistent window manager or have other bad syntax in the X11 startup file (i.e. $HOME/.xinitrc, or the system's version). If you didn't modify that, the best thing I can think of to try is to use "ps ax | grep X" and/or "ps ax | grep xinit" to find any X processes that are still active, and then kill them. Or just log out and log back in again.
