Okay, I installed grace-5.1.22.2, invoked xmgrace, went to File --> Open..., and then I clicked about on various files and didn't have any problems. Out of curiosity, did you upgrade this machine from 10.5 or did you install 10.6 freshly? My install was clean and so I didn't have any old files left over. One more point of information, my fink is a 64-bit setup. So next I upgraded grace to 5.1.22.3 with the same non-results.
