Did KDE actually start by itself (which was the goal), or are you
running it again?  If the latter, then I'd expect to see the same thing
again.

Presumably Apple's quartz-wm.

I just recalled something:  you  also need to do

sudo cp /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc /opt/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc

Quit X11, and then restart it.  Hopefully KDE will start up by itself.
