You don't double click on the .info files. These are just plain text
files that contain the instructions for building the package. You use
either the 'fink' command from the terminal or a graphical frontend
(like Fink Commander) to install the package. To get gimp installed,
you either need to type the following in Terminal:

fink install gimp2 <-- note the 2 to get the latest version

or use Fink Commander to install it (I don't use Fink Commander, so
can't provide the exact menu/command to use).

Are you double clicking the Fink Commander icon from inside the Disk
Image (disk mounted from the downloaded DMG file) ? If so, this will
fail. Drag the icon to your hard drive (into /Applications, or
/Users/<YOU>/Applications, the Desktop...) and then run it from there.

g77 is only available for 10.6 if you installed Fink as a 32bit program,
and then, only in the unstable tree, so it's not surprising that you
didn't see it. If you installed fink as a 64bit program, then g77 won't
be available to you at all.

This link shows where g77 is available:
http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/g77

This link explains how to turn on the unstable tree in order to see
packages which are only available in the unstable tree:
http://www.finkproject.org/faq/usage-fink.php?phpLang=en#unstable

Note: "unstable" in this sense means being tested, not unstable in the
"it will explode and break everything" sense.
