I'm glad it worked.

I forgot to suggest another option which was a little less lethal than a 
removal, which is to rename temporarily the directory where it resides, 
e.g. "sudo mv /opt/local /opt/local.bak"; and similarly if you need Fink 
out of the way use "sudo mv /sw /sw.bak".

That has essentially the same effect as a full uninstall, but allows you 
to restore Macports (or Fink) quickly.
