The way I was thinking everything should work is to have to extensions, .info and .xinfo. Then Fink could look for both, and if it is .info, use the old format, and if it is .xinfo, use the new (probably XML) info format. If anybody was interested in YAML info files, then we could also use .yinfo, though that would force everybody to know both formats.
