I agree with the spirit of changing the extension.

However, I wish the current extension wasn't .info, mainly because of GNU 
info. Could we change it to .fink or .finkinfo or something else? We don't 
have drop support for the .info extension, just add support for another, 
less confusing extension.

Not really a big deal...
