I'm sorry Finley, I didn't explain the issue adequately. I read about
the issue with System Preferences and that contributes because it reminds
the user of the presence of the extra users. However, I feel that the
greatest crime is the fact that NetInfo talks about changing ownership of
files owned by the deleted extra user while, in fact, it changes ownership
of EVERY file on the computer! In particular, it changes ownership of files
owned by root. If the consequences weren't so dire, one could almost
understand the presumption that all files in a users "home" directory are
owned by that user. If NetInfo simply asked the user if he wanted NetInfo to
change ownership of every file in the deleted users "home" directory, then
at least one could say that the user was warned about exactly what would
happen. Of course I believe that NetInfo should ACTUALLY CHECK the ownership
of the files it alters!
Still, it's important that Fink not assign / to be the home directory of
the extra users it creates. MacOS X differs from other flavors of *NIX in
that root isn't assigned / as its home dorectory; I guess we now know part
of the reason why. I gather that Max has fixed it so it should no longer be
an issue. Still, I wish that Apple's documentation was replete with warnings
concerning this issue.
Please forgive my lack of clarity. You can read the details of the most
lengthy discussion at Apples discussions site. Go to the Apple "Support"
page and follow the links: Discussions > Mac OS X > Mac OS X > Using
Technologies > Unix > host_processor_sets (os/kern)invalid argument. I'm
sorry I can't give you the exact URL but given the way WebObjects works, the
URL is different for every person. If I copied the URL that appeared on my
browser's address line, you would simply get a "file not found" error. The
following URL may work:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?[EMAIL PROTECTED]^[email protected]/23
Because it was taken from a search page but I can't guarantee that. There is
also a discussion at MacNN, in the MacOS X as UNIX thread, but it contains
little information. I hope that I was a bit more clear this time.
