OK, I see this now. It's a feature (bug?) of the script that is run the first time you do selfupdate-cvs. It does a cvs checkout and then copies in what was there before. The packages that have died in the meantime (i.e. between the time the old tree was updated last time and the present time) will then become zombies and show up with the "?".

Unfortunately, cvs does not have a cleanup option, "cvs update --delete" or something. For a clean solution, one would have to write a script that removes those files that are marked "?" by cvs update, something equivalent to

cvs up | grep "^\?" | awk '{print$2}' | xargs rm

Maybe this could grow into a fink option
"fink selfupdate[-cvs] --delete"?
