It may not work when virtual packages are involved.  I just did a test
to see what would happen if I wanted to remove my xfree86 installation:

[ldx3:~] hansen% sudo apt-get remove --no-act xfree86-rootless-threaded
Password:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
  glut-shlibs: Depends: libgl
  gnome-core-shlibs: Depends: gtkhtml but it is not going to be
installed
  gnucash: Depends: gtkhtml but it is not going to be installed
  gtkglarea: Depends: libgl
  qt3-shlibs: Depends: libgl
  xforms-shlibs: Depends: libgl
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

(the gtkhtml one is because of Evolution-1.2.1, so ignore it).
