Hi. I've noticed an increasing trend on the fink-users and fink-beginners
list to give advice of using "dpkg -r --force-depends" when dpkg conflicts
are encountered, and I wonder if we can find something better to suggest
to people. I'm concerned that the routine use of --force-depends will
put a lot of people's Fink installations into an unstable state.

What about suggesting that people use apt-get instead? Somebody here,
The problem with apt-get is twofold:
- It refuses to do anything when it is not satisfied about the integrity of the whole installation. In Alexander's case, for example, it complains about gtkhtml which has nothing to do with the intended operation. This can be useful for detecting other problems with the installation, but it can also be dangerous: If you do what it suggests, "apt-get -f install", it may remove half of your whole fink system, see the following point.
- It removes too much. In general, the -r --force-depends is used in a situation where one package (or a small number of packages) is to be replaced by an equivalent package and fink is just too stupid to realize what is going on.
To defend fink, it's actuall dpkg which is to stupid to realize what's going on.

And to defend dpkg, it's actually not dpkg's fault either, since it can#t know what Fink is going to do.

The only solution for this chicken&egg problem is for us to write a 100% complete dependency engine and then to just always call dpkg with --force-depends.

Cheers,

Max
