Not totally correct as you know, we do have an 'current' dir which we can throw packages into which point release stable users can access. For occasionally totally broken packages such as 'bidwatcher' at times (which can break when ebay changes formats), or gaim (which can break when MS changes formats) , it is a good use of it IMO.
