A for the news on the Fink home page, I never liked the format where one new item can push everything else to the "old news" category on the next page. I would prefer a format where each item has only a few lines on the front page plus a link to the complete item. In this way the last 5 to 10 news items can be visible on the front page. This is how many sites handle this kind of thing, and it is not only more reader-friendly, but also more "professional" looking than what we have now.
Find someone who knows XSLT and alter our stylesheets, so that the news format is adapted to what you like.
Personally I find those "..Read more" link like news items annoying and a waste of my time. If someone wants to read a history auf news items, that is what the news page itself is for. It absolutely makes sense to me to only display the lastes 2 or 3, fully on the front pagfe, since we update our news item every xxxxxx days.
That said, I am done with my rant :)
