(from the thread that Charles referenced) github.com offers the ability to access repositories via svn as well: <https://github.com/blog/626-announcing-svn-support> Since svn _is_ provided with 10.5+, having a selfupdate-svn would also be a way to avoid making git essential. The example in that URL uses HTTP, so I'm assuming that it would function through firewalls, which is a principal reason for general users not to use rsync.
