I would like the chime in on this topic. I have actually run two Xcode-free systems (which just the command-line tools) for 2 months, and until fink-0.32.4.1 came around this went just fine.
Alexander asked in his grep of "xcode" whether the BuildDepends on Xcode in gcc46 and gcc47 was necessary. No it is not. I've built gcc46 just fine after removing that BuildDepends. Only now, without Xcode installed I can no longer run the fink command AT ALL. It hangs on the use of "xcodebuild". Even a simple "fink selfupdate" fails to run. I would like to remind you that fink actually compiled without Xcode installed, but then it fails to run, which is pretty bad. I suggest to REMOVE again the dependency on Xcode in the fink command and in as many programs as possible. I guess I'm thus supporting Alexander Hansen's view, but would like to add too that the fink command itself is no "broken" without Xcode, just because of the xcodebuild command in the perl script /sw/lib/perl5/Fink/VirtPackage.pm (FYI the "xcode-select" command in the same script caused no issues).
