FYI, the improvements in the new gcc 4.8.0 release from the gcc48 package are

and can be seen from the Polyhedron 2005 benchmark results of gcc-4_7-branch 
(4.7.3) and gcc 4.8.0...

There is an overall 4.2% improvement in the mean runtime for the benchmarks and 
a mean 7.9%
reduction in executable sizes from 4.7.3svn to 4.8.0 release. There also is a 
5.2% reduction
in the mean compile time (which would be much better except for regressions in 
linpk and
tfft compile times).
