Thanks a lot for your reply. I'm using the latest release of the Fink 
package (0.3.2a). I had setup Fink the way you suggest since the 
beginning, and as a matter of fact, fink itself works correctly in every 
respect, including the ability to download the source packages with 
curl. Several other shell programs (including lynx) do work correctly 
with my proxy shell environmental variables. Two programs that do not 
"talk" with my proxy are apt-get and dillo. Dillo is more specific in 
its error messages:
"Dns_server: 192.168.0.1 is 0"
As a matter of fact, my proxy DOES NOT provide DNS services, it rather 
uses a remote provider.
Last but not least, my proxy provides firewall protection to the local 
network, so I'm behind a firewall.
Any clue?
